One of the most popular train museums in the United States, this has many restored locomotives ranging from the old wood-burning models up to the more recent diesel- operated ones. There are passenger cars, freight cars, and cabooses from different eras. During the warm months, there is a 40-minute train ride along the Sacramento River.
Built in 1856 by Sheldon Fogus, a merchant during the Gold Rush, the Mansion was later sold and remodeled twice, once expanded in 1872 when the architectural legacy was created that you can still see today. After the current $22 million 14-year rehabilitation and restoration, the 19,000-square-foot Mansion is also the official reception center when world leaders visit the state. The imposing structure was listed as a National Historic Landmark in May of 1987.
